Patriarchy, gender norms and female student dropout from high schools in Nepal

This study captured multiple perspectives on female student dropout from high schools in Nepal. We used random, purposive and snowballing sampling methods to select respondents seven categories: parents, dropped-out students, students school, head teachers, teachers district education office staff. The 96 participants were geographically diverse; six districts three ecological regions: the mountains, hills Terai. In-depth interviews conducted. Findings revealed an array of socio-cultural issues pertinent gender imbalance, a patriarchal value system educational that disfavoured students. It was concluded there need for substantial restructuring Nepal, including effective economic reform, stakeholder awareness programmes, sound planning eliminating inequalities functioning within at all levels socio-economic disadvantage.
